Westbourne History
After reading Robert Baden-Powell's "Scouting for Boys" book, pupils of the Westbourne Preparatory School founded our group in May 1911. Over a hundred years later, we are still going strong and today we are the oldest continuously run Scout Group in South Yorkshire.
In the late 1980s, we also became the first group in Sheffield to invite girls into Scouting and soon had girls in all sections.
Edmund Yerbury Priestman
On the 19th of November 1915, one of our early Scoutmasters gave his life in the Great War. Second Lieutenant Edmund Yerbury Priestman died whilst holding position in Gallipoli against on coming forces. The Army later renamed this location "Priestman's Post".
At Westbourne, we remember Edmund and recognise his bravery by naming our Broomhill HQ "Priestman's Post" and our Peak District retreat as "Priestman's Outpost".
